Domestic violence

Facing violence at home? Your rights and who to reach today

If you're reading this while frightened, the most important thing first: you are not without help, and what's happening to you is not something you have to accept. Domestic violence is not a private matter you must endure quietly — the law recognises it, protects against it, and gives you real, usable rights. This is one of those situations where a guide can point the way, but getting actual help matters more than reading.

If you're in danger right now

Reach the police or a women's helpline immediately. Your safety comes before any paperwork or process. There are helplines and protection services meant for exactly this moment.

What the law gives you

India's domestic-violence law protects against physical, emotional, sexual, and economic abuse — and it protects not only wives but women in the household more broadly. Through it, a court can grant protection orders to stop the abuse, residence orders so you can't simply be thrown out of your home, and orders for maintenance and support. There are Protection Officers and recognised support organisations whose job is to help you use these rights.

The steps, with help

  1. Reach safety and, if you can, a helpline or Protection Officer.
  2. Keep any evidence — medical records, photos, messages, a note of incidents and dates.
  3. A protection order can be sought through the court, and support organisations and lawyers can help you file.

Why this needs a lawyer and real support

This is serious, and you shouldn't have to navigate it alone. Speak to a lawyer or a support organisation — many help survivors free of charge, and legal aid is a right if you can't afford one.
